3AM - Chiodos (Song Reviews)
3AM' is the third single released off of the upcoming studio album Devil from Chiodos. The first two singles released were Ole Fishlips is Dead Now and Why the Munsters Matter released January 27th and February 18th respectively. These three tracks are ‘instant gratification’ tracks along with three others off of the album; Duct Tape, Behvis Bullock, and Under Your Halo. When you pre-order the album, you get an automatic download of these songs. 3AM has more of a ‘pop’ sound and style than the past two singles, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it shows diversity! However we all know what happens if a band shows any bit of diversity in their sound. The sound itself has been compared to that of D.R.U.G.S and (my hometown heroes) All Time Low, or as one YouTube commenter stated a “Lucky Charms commercial”; and of course many people have pointed out Matchbox 20 parallels with their song of the same name. Chiodos: “These one night stands are meaningless. But I'm laying in bed with a girl I just met at 3AM.” Matchbox 20: “She says baby. It's 3 am I must be lonely." Somewhat parallel, not really, but close enough to be noted. It seems as though with this track people either love it and say it’s going back to classic Chiodos, or they hate it and think that it’s complete shit. There was no ‘well it’s okay’ it was either love or hate (and some blatant disrespect) that I saw in the comments section, and that seems to be becoming normal. Even though the song has happy and poppy overtones, it actually talk about something pretty serious; the difficulties that arise from putting your career before your relationship, something many people have, will, or are currently facing. Front man Craig Owens stated about the song it’s “the most honest and vulnerable I think I’ve ever been in a song.” When you listen to the lyrics the message is very clear; “All I wanted was the world, all you wanted was me” and “I wish I would have loved you instead of being selfish and being so obsessed with my dreams”.
Rating: 3.5/5- This song was actually really good lyrically and meaning wise. Being someone who has been on both sides of that situation at one time or another it does hit home a little bit. The way the song is written lyrically and the contrasting ‘happy’ instrumentals and sound make me think of ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ by Third Eye Blind (you remember, I know you do. Everyone in the 90’s sung about doing crystal meth because it was to a happy beat). I think it was great, perhaps not my favorite track but it wasn’t bad, just a little different.
