The Mountains We Climb - To Trust A Liar (Album Review)

The Mountains We Climb is the first EP from Illinois based metalcore five man band, To Trust a Liar released August 6, 2013. The group was signed to Imminence Records in mid September, a little over a month after the release of the EP. The album itself is short at 5 songs and only 19 minutes, but powerful with grinding and driving guitars and thrashing and crashing cymbals and drums. They could almost be compared to We Came as Romans style wise. Starting off the album is ‘A Deep Sleep’ a song with melodic yet driving guitars, and the alternating singing and screaming of Salvatore Sierra and Dan Bochenczak. This first song sets the tone for the remainder of the album; hitting you hard and fast and leaving you wanting more. The second track ‘Feathered Crown’ was the second single oddly enough, off of ‘Mountains’ released two days before the EP, the first single being ‘Sleep’ which was released late February of this year as a teaser track on the band’s YouTube channel. ‘Lost Diamond’ is the third track on the album and is one of, if not the heaviest on the entire album and is the only official lyric video released by the band and is also on their YouTube channel. ‘Northern Star’ is track four, and while it still has the heavy undertones and breakdowns that are consistent throughout, it is to me at least, a little bit of a calmer song on the album, but just by a hair and is my personal favorite. The final track ‘Black Gloved’ is at a tie for heaviest song with ‘Diamond’, again with the grinding guitars and heavy, hard drum kicks which seems to be becoming their signature sound. While To Trust A Liar could still be considered new to the scene, but it’s obvious they aren’t going anywhere any time soon as they are planning a tour and new music for the upcoming year, according to a HighwireDaze.com article.

Rating: 3.5/5-For a band that’s just starting out in the metalcore (or heck just music in general) scene, they killed it. It’s not perfect, but who’s first album is? For their age and how long they have been a band they have accomplished much more than many could dream of. They already have a wonderful fan base which they are more than thankful for, and they express their gratitude often via their facebook and twitter. I can see them going very far with their musical careers. They may change their style, they may remain the same, no one knows what the future holds for the boys in TTAL, but one thing is certain, they aren’t done yet! Not by a long shot.
